The rise of Tambolaka is not merely a shift in geography—it reflects a broader transformation in how travelers access and experience Sumba.
Over the past few years, Tambolaka's Lede Kalumbang Airport (formerly Tambolaka Airport) has steadily expanded its role as the island's principal aviation hub. Located on Sumba's western side, the airport is significantly closer to many of the island's most sought-after destinations, including Nihiwatu, Ratenggaro Village, Waikuri Lagoon, Mandorak Beach, and the future Isoola Sumba development.
For guests travelling to Isoola Sumba, this shift is particularly important. Arriving through Tambolaka can reduce overland travel time substantially compared to arriving via Waingapu on the eastern side of the island. Rather than crossing much of Sumba by road, guests can begin their island experience sooner, enjoying a shorter and more comfortable transfer to the resort.
More Flights, More Convenience
The airport has seen increasing airline activity and route development. In early 2026, Batik Air launched direct Denpasar–Tambolaka services using Airbus A320 jet aircraft, offering both Business and Economy Class. This marked a significant milestone for Sumba's air connectivity and elevated the travel experience available to visitors.
Today, Tambolaka is connected to major regional hubs including Bali, Surabaya, Kupang, and Lombok, making the island more accessible than ever before.
Unlike smaller turboprop aircraft commonly used on regional routes in the past, the airport's 2,300-meter runway can accommodate larger narrow-body jets such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737. These aircraft carry significantly more passengers, allowing airlines to increase capacity while providing greater comfort and reliability.
A Growing Airport for a Growing Destination
The future of Lede Kalumbang Airport is equally promising.
Airport authorities have announced plans to expand apron capacity, add an additional taxiway, and enlarge the passenger terminal to accommodate increasing visitor numbers. The terminal is already operating close to its designed capacity, reflecting the growing popularity of Sumba as a premium tourism destination. Development works are expected to begin from 2027 onwards.
Longer-term plans also include extending the runway from 2,300 meters to 2,500 meters, enabling greater operational flexibility for larger aircraft and potentially opening opportunities for additional routes in the future.
These improvements are not simply infrastructure projects—they are strategic investments in Sumba's future. As luxury resorts, eco-tourism ventures, and sustainable developments continue to emerge across the island, air connectivity will become increasingly critical in supporting high-value tourism and economic growth.
“For discerning travelers seeking authenticity, space, and connection with nature, the future begins in Tambolaka.”
What This Means for Isoola Sumba
For Isoola Sumba, Tambolaka's evolution represents a significant advantage.
As the airport grows into Sumba's primary gateway, guests will enjoy easier access, shorter transfer times, and a smoother arrival experience. The combination of modern jet services, expanding airport facilities, and proximity to western Sumba's most iconic landscapes positions Isoola at the heart of the island's next chapter.
In many ways, the journey to Sumba is becoming as effortless as the destination is extraordinary.
